![]() Of course, Battlefield 4 would be the first of many seventh-generation multiplayer games to buckle under the weight of their own server traffic, and even DICE has continued to struggle to ensure a smooth launch period with future instalments. The following year, even DICE acknowledged that 4's server woes had shaken Battlefield fans' trust in the franchise, and dealt lasting damage to the very legacy of the Battlefield IP. For those who can't remember, the first few weeks of release were so buggy and unreliable that EA became the target of a number of lawsuits, suggesting that the publisher had misled audiences with its marketing. Rubbing up against Battlefield 4's matchmaking issues also proves to be an unexpected reminder of the game's infamous launch period. The fact that you're less likely to see such Levolution events happen – since you'll join servers that triggered them half an hour ago – only makes them more of a treat to sit back and enjoy when they do. Watching Paracel Storm's warship plough its way onto the beach amidst a tropical storm remains just as jaw-dropping as it did eight years ago. Still, those events haven't lost their potency in Battlefield 4. It's rare to join a match that won't send Siege of Shanghai's tower tumbling down within the first few minutes, for example, leaving players left with the much less interesting conflict zone of rubble and steel to fight amongst for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, this far on from launch, matches are dominated by players who know exactly how to trigger a map's Levolution event before the game's really even started. Speaking of collapsing towers, Battlefield 4 is also the entry which introduced Levolution to DICE's shooter series, allowing players to trigger massive, map-changing events that offered operatic spectacle never seen from an online game before. ![]() "For a game that came out in 2013, Battlefield 4 still looks mighty impressive."Įven so, there's something to be said about a game that lets you ride a quad bike off of a collapsing tower and into the middle of a tank battle below, to give just one example of the kind of watercooler moments which future instalments would offer less and less of as time went on. Even in this instalment, DICE walked back on some of the freedoms it gave players in Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2, removing the ability to take off from runways (and thus the opportunity to sabotage them) and dialling down some of the destruction in its environments. This is the last Battlefield game that truly embraced the founding design philosophies of the franchise where jets could be RendeZooked, helicopters could become roadkill, and snipers could find perches 400 feet above the ground. Dynamic lighting and weather effects also help maintain the illusion, and with the whole thing running at 60 frames per second in 4K resolution on PS5, the game can be genuinely stunning at times.īut people aren't playing Battlefield 4 for its shiny yet somewhat dated production value. When bullets crackle past your head and the industrial whir of an apache drowns out the skies above, the sense of immersion is inimitable. That's in strong part to the game's sound design, which is less vulnerable to aging, and still eclipses the authenticity of many other contemporaries with its wartorn soundscapes. Thankfully, the map we'd made it into was a good one – Rogue Transmission – and while Battlefield 4 is showing its age in more ways than just that borked Battlelog, it didn't take long to see why everyone's returning to this eight year old shooter in anticipation of 2042. ![]() A quick internet search revealed that this is because Battlelog, the awkward social system that DICE and EA once pushed into all of its Battlefield games, was shut down in 2016, and so players now have no way of squadding up in instalments that relied on the service to do exactly that.Īfter much faffing and shared frustration, the two of us finally managed to get into a game together (we had to both select a match from the server list and pray that we'd join in on the same team), but at this point it already felt like an exercise in diminishing returns. ![]() I couldn't join my friend's party, nor could he join mine, thus leaving us incapable of entering a match together. The first signs of trouble appeared the moment the game booted up, and quickly revealed that the ability to create or join each other's Squads – a key part of the Battlefield experience – was completely broken. ![]()

It is usually 6.5mm thick, as it rarely needs to be any thicker for the way it is used. It is a belt that is skinny at the front, where the buckle joins together, but fattens around the back, with a kind of ‘pad’ over your lower back. It could go by a few other names, but the principle is the same. The first, and probably most common, is what Anvil calls the Weight Training Belt. Well, there are a couple of main types of belt, with a few variations, which I will go through now. Now, the next logical questions that follow after seeing a whole lot of different types of these “miracle cures for bad backs” are: “Why are there so many types, and what’s the difference?” I soon learned it was a Training Belt: a belt, usually made of leather (or sometimes a combination of non-stretch fabrics), of specific shape or dimensions, worn while training or when competing, in order to assist with generating power and creating a stable core to move heavy weight more safely. I remember walking into a gym in my early days of training, and seeing some big dude swaggering around the gym in a singlet with a big leather belt cinched so tight he could barely keep hold of the watermelons under his arms, and my very first thought was, “What is that around his waist?” If you do spend some time in the gym, or you’re a crossfitter, olympic lifter, powerlifter, bodybuilder, or just a casual gym-goer with a deep thirst for some understanding of why those fat guys strap themselves in before sucking in as much air as they can and benching some stupid amount of weight for 1 rep with an 8cm range of movement - this one’s for you. So here I am, writing down everything I know about Training Belts. One of the team, and my training partner, recently said to me over coffee, “Why don’t you write an article for the people who don’t know what belt they need, or why they might even want one?” ![]() I certainly don’t curl in the squat rack (and let’s be real, unless you are training for a Strict Curl Powerlifting Event, you definitely don’t need to be training your biceps on a platform or in a rack), but I rarely go an entire training session without wrapping my wrists, putting on some knee sleeves, or at the very least, strapping myself into a big leather belt.Īt Anvil, we sell Custom Training Belts. However, all judgment and jokes aside - I proudly belong to the group of people who probably take the gym too seriously, and my gym bag probably has more equipment in it than even I think is necessary. Judging and being judged seems to be part and parcel of going to a gym - something I certainly don’t support but would be lying if I said I haven’t judged people for something I either didn’t understand or didn’t think was “the right way” to do things. Cardio bunnies, kitted out in some ultra-breathable hi-vis big name brand outfit, bodybuilders in singlets made from less material than most women’s lingerie, casual gym-goers wearing clothes from the bottom of their drawers that look like they belong in an op-shop, and, of course, people who take the gym way too seriously - wearing some combination of neoprene sleeves, shoes with wooden heels, 3 metre long wraps on their wrists, and a big leather belt that probably would be less out-of-place on a medieval blacksmith than it is on a chubby guy doing curls in the squat rack. Just like the equipment, the people are almost the same everywhere you go. I couldn’t count on both hands the different gyms I’ve been to, but the basics rarely change. In fact, almost every day of the week for the better part of a decade, I have walked into a building full of cardio equipment, cable and plate machines, platforms, racks, and free weights. I have been going to the gym for the majority of my entire adult life. An Anvil Training Article by Marshall Officer ![]() ![]() Doom Eternal is a character action FPS, in a Ninja Gaiden and Metal Gear Rising mastery gradient compared to ULTRAKILL‘s free-form and stylish Devil May Cry inspirations. The loop is now not just move and shoot, but you have to remember to chainsaw low tier enemies for ammo (now called fodder enemies), light enemies on fire before glory kills or blood punches for maximum armor gain, shoot off weakpoints, take down more aggressive threats quickly or move around them while picking off lesser threats, and so on and so forth. Getting it requires doing six slayer gate challenges hidden in levels.Īdd in the new dash ability, similar to Shadow Warrior 2013‘s, and the far more aggressive enemies, and you have a very different experience from the last game. There’s also the late game crucible (replaced with a hammer in the second DLC that can stun enemies) that one-shots even the largest demons, and the unmaker returning as the Unmakyr, which now fires huge projectiles that tears through enemies like nothing else and runs on BFG ammo. The BFG is the same, but the super shotgun now has a meathook that chains to an enemy and drags you to them for a close up shot, plus lights on fire when mastered to help drop armor. Chaingun keeps the mobile turret mode for max dakka, with a new energy shield mode for tanking. The ballista is the new rail cannon, charge shot detonating after a second and scope replaced with a wide beam good for frozen enemies. The plasma gun is way more useful with a much stronger heat blast mod (plus a new microwave beam that explodes enemies after a bit of time), while the rocket launcher is still trash. The heavy cannon, the new assault rifle, works the same but is far more useful now for sniping weakspots with the scope mod. The pistol blaster was removed (now hidden in the command console) for a starter shotgun, which loses the charge blast for a full auto mod, grenade shots replaced with sticky bombs that can shoot out three in a clip. Sentinel crystals act as argent cells this time and can also unlock six different perks to improve your flame belch, unlock better item pick-up, and your new blood punch power that can be used to break barriers and do big melee damage to a wide swath in front of you. You have fundamental upgrades, environmental ones that also make explosive barrels drop ammo, your two different grenades, and your map. Your armor can be upgraded via big coins earned from level challenges and force ghosts, which now upgrades a more useful set of perimeters. Runes have been simplified into a set of nine different buffs and abilities, including very useful mid-air slow-mo, and they can no longer be mastered. You also have the flame belch as a separate button, which sets enemies on fire, making them drop armor when damaged or killed. The frag grenade has a better arc and can be used to put cacodemons in a glory kill state via indigestion (they eat the grenade), but the ice bomb is the real star as it freezes enemies for a window of free damage or a quick chainsaw kill. Your equipment is now down to two tools, but they’re far more useful. Oh, and you start at sixteen shells because ammo is now severely limited compared to the last game. You learn quickly as you can’t melee zombies in a glory kill state and have to use ammo, the chainsaw refills when empty and you can have up to three charges, and there’s a weakpoint system in place that lets you weaken enemies, put them in a glory kill state, or do extra damage with the right weapon or mod. They share a lot of the same foundation, but the details have been completely rewritten. It is also extremely different from Doom 2016. It has had its own controversies, and there’s this feeling it’s going to end up in a strange place in the history of both Doom and Id Software. ![]() While there’s fans who love it, who are definitely the majority, there’s also a lot with more mixed feelings, and some who disliked it for changes to the formula and tone. They used the example of the assassination of U.S. In 1977, researchers at Harvard published a paper entitled Flashbulb Memories, in which they noted that people are often able to vividly recollect where they were when an event occurred that was significant to them. The results of MacKay’s experiment, and others with similar outcomes, suggest that an emotive state at the time we perceive and process an observation can positively affect the encoding of information into the short or even long-term memory.Īlthough the emotional Stroop test demonstrates this link between emotion and memory, the role of emotion has been long suspected. ![]() MacKay found that taboo words, which were intended to elicit an emotional response, were recalled more frequently than words which carried less emotional connotations (MacKay et al, 2004). They were also later asked to recall the words after the initial test. ![]() Each word was printed in a different color, and subjects were asked to name the color. For instance, cognitive psychologist Donald MacKay and a team of researchers asked participants to take part in an emotional Stroop test, in which they were presented with different words in quick succession. The findings of a series of studies have implied that emotion plays a role at various specific stages of remembering ( encoding) information, consolidating memories and during the recall of experiences at a later date. When we are led to experience feelings of delight, anger or other states of mind, vivid recollections are often more possible than during everyday situations in which we feel little or no emotional attachment to an event. It appears that emotionally charged situations can lead us to create longer lasting memories of the event. Coaxing ourselves into the same mood we were experiencing when we witnessed an event, for instance, has been found to often have a positive effect on our chances of recalling specific details relating to it. Moreover, emotions are believed to play a role in determining whether we can recall a stored memory at the time we try to revisit it. ![]() ![]() It has a small cast of characters, you can unlock almost every animatronic in the game, and the gameplay is really good.
